Fibrant is a leader in innovation and sustainability and has made significant progress over the past five years. The result is a world-class low ecological footprint of our products made at the Chemelot site in South Limburg. With a subsidy from the Ministry of Climate and Green Growth, we are now taking our next step and reducing nitrogen emissions by approximately 60%. A significant step that contributes to reducing nitrogen emissions in the Netherlands.
Thanks to the subsidy, we continue to invest in advanced techniques. This subsidy scheme is part of the government's initiative to jointly contribute to a more sustainable and cleaner basic industry. During the recent visit (March 10, 2025) of Minister Sophie Hermans of Climate and Green Growth, the national and international importance of the companies at Chemelot was once again confirmed.
Minister Sophie Hermans (Climate and Green Growth) emphasizes in her press release of March 27:
"The industry is indispensable in the Netherlands. With this subsidy, we help companies to significantly reduce their ammonia emissions, beyond the legal obligations. This is a good example of how industry and government can work together on cleaner production processes and a livable environment. Nitrogen reduction, sustainability, and a strong industry can go hand in hand in this way."
Deputy Stephan Satijn of the Province of Limburg is pleased with the granted subsidy:
"With this, we will really take steps forward to make the industry more sustainable and thus retain it for Limburg. This is not only important for our economy but is certainly also of national and European importance. This industry produces essential raw materials that we need daily, and we want to continue to have access to them."
Martijn Amory, CEO of Fibrant, is happy with this gesture and states:
"We take our responsibility and implement innovative technologies to make our products more sustainable. With the projects we realize with this subsidy, we are once again taking significant steps. The chemical industry is in trouble, but these kinds of investments show that both the business community and the government continue to fight for a sustainable industry."
What are we going to do?
An important source of nitrogen emissions at Chemelot is the NIFA factory, which is part of Fibrant. By building a new gas washing installation, also known as a scrubber, the emission will be reduced by more than 100 tons of nitrogen per year. This technology uses two different liquids, which largely prevent emissions, and the washing liquids are recycled within the factory itself. A future-proof solution that fits our strategy.
Olaf Poorter, Director Technology, Projects & Sustainability of Fibrant,
"In addition to our previous impactful sustainability initiatives, we will further reduce our nitrogen emissions. For this, we are building a new installation that cleans our emissions in several steps and processes them within our factories instead of emitting them. We will implement the projects in the second half of 2026."
